Why is premium MDF used for luxury bespoke furniture and cabinetry?

Premium MDF luxury bespoke cabinetry

Claude Clémaron describes the benefits of using premium MDF for luxury bespoke furniture and cabinetry.

Many people think we only use solid wood and real wood veneer in our bespoke furniture. However, in high quality furniture design, aesthetics, functionality and longevity are paramount. That’s why in our bespoke freestanding and fitted cabinets and furniture we often combine solid wood and high-quality moisture-resistant (MR) MDF. Using a mix of these materials requires expert joinery skills and knowledge and the decision on factors such as the size and structure of the cabinets, strength and load-bearing requirements and the desired aesthetic. As an example, shelving might have a MRMDF core with a real wood veneer or solid wood edge. This can be a cost-effective way to achieve the desired natural look while maintaining structural integrity.

Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF) is often associated with mass-produced, budget furniture; with solid wood furniture being perceived as the sturdier, premium option.

However, this is no longer case. Advanced manufacturing techniques have led to new premium high-grade MDF types which are far superior to standard MDF and have key advantages over natural wood.

Unlike natural wood which can bend or crack over time, high-grade moisture-resistant (MR) MDF offers exceptional strength, a smoother surface, and greater durability in areas of fluctuating temperatures and humidity. This makes it particularly well-suited for fitted kitchen and bathroom furniture.

What is premium MDF?

Also known as moisture-resistant (MR) MDF, premium MDF and high-density fibreboard (HDF), high-grade MDF is an engineered wood product made by compressing wood fibres with resin under high pressure and heat. It is denser than medium-density fibreboard which contributes to its increased hardness and strength.

Claude Clémaron lists five compelling reasons to use high-grade MDF for bespoke fitted furniture and cabinetry:

1            Superior stability, strength and durability

High-density MDF contains more wood fibres per unit volume than standard MDF. This increased density means it can withstand greater impact and wear and tear, making it ideal for high-traffic areas or furniture projects that require a durable surface.

Thanks to its advanced, engineered design, high quality MDF won’t sag, bend, crack, swell, buckle or split, ensuring that cabinets will maintain their shape, appearance and functionality for decades.

2            Exceptional surface quality for a high-end finish

High-end-MDF-cabinetryHigh quality MDF has a uniform density with no visible wood grain, knots or rings like natural timbers, This gives it a smooth, hard, even and refined surface which can be painted, lacquered or veneered to a very high-end finish.

For painted cabinets, we can offer a hand-painted brush finish or spray-painted finish. A hand-painted finish allows for unique patterns and easier repairs, while a spray-painted finish gives a flawless, more uniform coverage. Another option is to veneer the MDF. For example, you could have a real oak veneer, which could then be spraypainted in any colour while retaining the beautiful wood grain appearance.

3            Greater design versatility for customised furniture

High grade MR MDF has a uniform structure and smooth even surface which makes it particularly suitable for minimalist furniture designs, where sleek lines and finishes are desired.

The right kind of premium MDF used by professional cabinetmakers like us is superb for crafting decorative pieces, complex designs and Bespoke-utility-roomfine detailing. High quality MDF has a consistent density which allows for clean, precise cuts and beautifully crisp, smooth edges and shapes. This makes it ideal for carving skirtings, cabinet cornices, intricate mouldings and door or wall panels and other decorative elements. With so many options for customisation the only limit is your imagination.

4            Better moisture and heat resistance

High quality, moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF) is essential for furniture in areas prone to humidity or potential water contact, like kitchens and bathrooms. Unlike solid wood, high-grade MR MDF doesn’t swell or warp when exposed to heat or dampness.

5            More environmentally friendly

MDF is primarily composed of recycled wood fibres, such as wood shavings, which are collected from sawmills and other wood-processing facilities and would otherwise be discarded. By using recycled wood rather than virgin timber, MDF reduces the demand for new timber and helps to conserve forests. Also choosing an eco-friendly material that lasts longer reduces the need for replacements, further conserving resources and minimising waste.
